WITH
ANOTHER RECORD BREAKING SEASON BEHIND US, CROWN ALERT WANTS
TO REMIND ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS OF A FEW SIMPLE MAINTENANCE CHECKS
TO PERFORM, AS WELL AS A COUPLE OF SAFETY ISSUES.
1. INSPECT WHIPS ON ALL SWITCHES FOR CRACKS. TIGHTEN CLAMP HOLDING
WHIPS.
2. CHECK & TIGHTEN ALL BOLTS ON MOUNTING BRACKETS. INSPECT
ALL THE SAFETY CABLES.
3. FOR RIGS WITH A DEAD WEIGHT ON THE DEAD LINE NEAR THE CROWN,
INSPECT AND TIGHTEN THE EYE BOLTS IN THE TOP OF THE WEIGHT.
MAKE SURE THE WEIGHT IS ON THE DRILL LINE.
4. CHECK THAT ALL CORDS ARE TIGHTLY PLUGGED IN AND STRUNG
THROUGH THE DERRICK IN A PROTECTED MANNER.

CHECK SPARE INVENTORY SUPPLY (BULBS, FUSES, WHIPS, AND CORDS)
AND RESTOCK AS REQUIRED. WE RECOMMEND 6 OF EACH AND ONE SPARE
DERRICK CORD.

AS PER CAODC INFORMATION BULLETIN T-00-02, THE CROWN SAVER
MUST BE TESTED EACH SHIFT: The driller should slowly raise
the blocks up to the crown to trip the top switch and confirm
the unit is functioning properly.

WE ALSO RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING TESTS ON A DAILY BASIS:
For rigs equipped with a floor saver option, the same procedure
should be followed to test the floor saver switch.
For rigs equipped with Eaton Brake or Baylor Brake flow monitor
option, turn off the cooling pump and make sure the buzzer
sounds and the light changes position.
For rigs equipped with the BOP stack saver option, close the
pipe rams and confirm the Crown Alert is functioning properly.

AS WITH ALL OVERHEAD EQUIPMENT WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND A 1000
DAY RECERTIFICATION OF YOUR SYSTEM. THIS CAN BE DONE AT MAST
RECERTIFCATION TIME.
REMEMBER:
NEVER BYPASS THE CROWN ALERT SYSTEM BY LOCKING IN THE BYPASS
BUTTON. THIS LEAVES THE RIG COMPLETELY UNPROTECTED. THE REASON
THE BYPASS BUTTON IS SPRING LOADED IS SO THAT THE DRILLER HAS
TO STOP, EVALUATE THE SITUATION AND THEN DEPRESS THE BUTTON
BY HAND TO BYPASS. WITH A SPRING LOADED BUTTON, THE CROWN ALERT
IS ALWAYS ARMED AND READY
BE
SURE THE GREEN READY LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON. THIS INDICATES THE
CROWN ALERT IS ARMED AND READY.
NEVER
UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ALLOW ANY SORT OF A BY-PASS TO
BE INSTALLED IN THE SYSTEM. CROWN ALERT POLOCIES FIRMLY
STATE THAT WE WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY SORT OF A BYPASS IN
OUR SYSTEM, OTHER THAN THE SPRING LOADED ONE SUPPLIED
BY CROWN ALERT. FURTHER MORE, PLACING A BYPASS IN ANY
CROWN SAVER SYSTEM PUTS THAT RIG IN DIRECT CONTRAVENTION
OF THE GENERAL SAFETY REGULATION AND THE OCCUPATIONAL
HEALTH AND SAFETY ACT.
BY DOING THIS PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE NOW, YOU CAN
BE CONFIDENT THAT YOUR CROWN ALERT SYSTEM WILL WORK TROUBLE
FREE THROUGH THE WINTER SEASON. |
